Jonah’s first landscapes showed scenes in Wensleydale, where he was working as a forester during 1941–44. By the 1950s he had gained mastery of the medium, showing confidence and control. His watercolour output was intermittent until 1981–82, when he used a fellowship at the University of Wales’s Gregynog study centre to develop his painting. This yielded some of his best landscapes, and many more followed over the next two decades.
