In 1981–82 Jonah served a year’s fellowship at Gregynog Hall, the University of Wales’s residential study centre near Newtown. He wished to spend the time developing his watercolour painting, a medium he had delved in only intermittently for many years. The result was a substantial body of work, many of them scenes at Gregynog itself. Rhaeadr Cynfal, which shows Rhaeadr y Cwm on Afon Cynfal near Ffestiniog, is an example of his most successful landscape painting from this period.
