In ‘Gwynedd Freeman’, one of his collection of essays and memoirs in The Gallipoli Diary (Seren Books, 1989*), Jonah’s reflections about Bryn Cader Faner – “a favourite area of mine. Any excuse will serve to take me there” – concluded that “because it exists, because it is surely a monument to a dead chief, [it] is about the most Welsh fact I know. It is among the oldest deposits in that collective unconscious that animates Welshness…”
