One of Jonah’s first painted inscriptions was done in 1982 as a design for a print by Gwasg Gregynog quoting from Gruffudd ab yr Ynad Coch’s great poem ‘Lament for Llywelyn the Last’, in time for the 700th anniversary of the Prince’s death. Jonah drew extensively for this on the vernacular style of lettering used by David Jones in his painted texts. As time went on, he came to use vivid colour, combined with images and symbols. In this Jonah became something of a pioneer, and his approach has been much emulated in the 21st century.
