“The Word” was central to Jonah’s whole working life. Not only did he carve letters in stone, but he also wrote books and essays, which were printed and published, and he broadcast. It was a natural step for him to turn to painting words. His first efforts combining text with images were made in the 1960s, when he set out a couple of his own poems.

But it was only in 1981–82, during his fellowship at Gregynog, that he properly launched into painted inscriptions. In his final years these became the main focus of his artistic output.
