Watercolour inscriptions: Welsh–American Portfolio

In April 1984 the University of Western Illinois commissioned Jonah to produce 14 painted inscriptions of Welsh poems for a touring portfolio and exhibition, the aim of which was to raise awareness of the richness of Wales’s culture and its influence in the USA. The texts covered two poems each by Dannie Abse, Euros Bowen, Gillian Clarke, Tony Curtis, Bobi Jones, Glyn Jones and Gwyn Thomas, some in English and others in Welsh. The results are among Jonah’s finest painted inscriptions. He noted that the style of lettering he employed owed much to “very secular examples in [the] National Museum of Wales (Welsh Roman stones far far removed from their classical source) and to David Jones, the great exemplar”.
