Jonah began making bronze portrait busts in the late 1950s. He found the challenge interesting and often enjoyable, describing the process of modelling two great old men living in North Wales – the writer John Cowper Powys and the philosopher Bertrand Russell – in essays published in The Gallipoli Diary. He later made busts of two prominent Welshmen, the Plaid Cymru leader and MP Gwynfor Evans and BBC broadcaster and executive Sir Huw Wheldon. Jonah also made full-length figures in bronze of the Welsh educational reformers Sir OM Edwards and his son Sir Ifan ab Owen Edwards.
