Sir Huw Wheldon

Bronze cast bust from modelled clay of Sir Huw Wheldon, 1979. Collection: Royal Television Society. Photograph: Robert Greetham.

Jonah took this on in 1979 as a commission from his old army friend. He recalled doing the work in an essay in The Gallipoli Diary*: “The one thing I remember most forcibly about making a portrait bust of Huw Wheldon was that it was great fun. I modelled it at his home on Richmond Hill, and amid his bouts of busyness over [the] BBC or the London School of Economics … he would say: ‘Shall we have a few fragrant moments, then?’ and sit down and patiently abide my attempts to capture that extraordinarily volatile countenance in clay.”
