Bronze cast bust from modelled clay of Bertrand Russell, 1959. Collections: private collection and National Library of Wales. Photograph: Robert Greetham. Jonah and Russell were near-neighbours on the Portmeirion estate.
From The Gallipoli Diary: “Clough [Williams-Ellis, architect of Portmeirion] asked me to carve a profile of the great man … I sought a meeting to arrange sittings. As soon as I saw Bertie (as we all called him with the presumptuous lèse-majesté of mere neighbours), I knew a polite profile was not the right answer. So I asked him if I might make a full portrait bust of him and he readily consented … There was already a bust of him by Epstein … probably the greatest modern portrait sculptor after Rodin, but his head of Bertie is heavy, devoid of the impishness that characterises him. I felt no compunction about following the master.”
