Description

Jonah Jones – watercolour and pencil, 1982

In 1981–82 Jonah Jones served a year’s fellowship at Gregynog Hall, the University of Wales’s residential study centre near Newtown, Powys. He aimed to spend the time developing his watercolour painting, a medium he had used intermittently for many years. The result was a substantial body of work of which Three Men on a Winter Hill is a fine example. It juxtaposes quotations from John Berryman’s lines on Brueghel’s snowy scene of hunters in his poem ‘Winter Landscape’, the first line of T.S. Eliot’s ‘The Journey of the Magi’, and Psalm 147 Verse 16 in English and Verse 17 in Welsh.

Printed by screenless lithography and individually numbered from a limited edition set of 100, in a card mount, 63 cms x 71 cms.
