Scene & Word learned recently that the guidebook 111 Places in Cardiff that You Shouldn’t Miss, issued in 2025 by the German publishers Emons Verlag GmbH, includes Jonah Jones’s Panorama Stone in Cardiff Bay. Regrettably, our pleasure at this publicity for the work was tempered by the absence of any mention of Jonah’s name. S&W director Peter Jones wrote as below to the author, Julia Goodfellow-Smith, via the publishers on 13 April. So far no reply has been received.
Dear Ms Goodfellow-Smith,
Looking through your book 111 Places in Cardiff that You Shouldn’t Miss, published last year, I was pleased to see that you had included the Panorama Stone, “a compass of connection” in Cardiff Bay. This monument was made by my father, the sculptor Jonah Jones. Unfortunately you failed to mention his name, even though it is clearly given on the stone. This is an omission the Panorama Stone shares with other public sculptures listed, such as the statues commemorating Aneurin Bevan, Billy the Seal, Fred Keenor, Ivor Novello and the Rugby Codebreakers. I appreciate that the format of the book limits the space available for information about the sights listed, but surely the artists whose skill and labour created these works deserve to be credited?
