Respected Welsh lettercutter Ieuan Rees dies

Scene & Word has learned with regret of the death on 31 October 2025 at the age of 84 of Ieuan Rees, Wales’s foremost lettercutter and calligrapher of recent decades. A native of Carmarthenshire, Ieuan had his workshop at Ammanford. His inscriptions can be found all over Wales and beyond, gracing many important public sites, particularly in South Wales.

As a student of lettering in the early 1960s, Ieuan once spent an afternoon in Jonah Jones’s workshop honing his skill and picking up tips. After Jonah died, Scene & Word turned to Ieuan for the design of a commemorative tablet, which Peter Jones, Jonah’s son, cut in 2006. The stone is sited on the Hercules Monument in Portmeirion. No better choice of designer could have been made; Jonah much admired Ieuan’s strong, elegant lettering.
