The 2024 recipient of the Gwobr Jonah Jones Prize for young artists was Beca Fflur, jeweller/craftsperson, and took the form of sponsoring Beca to hold a series of workshops at the Rhondda Cynon Taf National Eisteddfod, taking inspiration from Jonah’s stained glass and lettering work.
Examples of Beca Fflur’s work:
At Beca Fflur’s workshops for adults, Scene & Word’s ‘Alphabetum Romanum Jonah’ was used as inspiration…
… while at her workshops for children the source was Jonah’s stained glass.
In between her busy workshop sessions at Y Lle Celf on the Eisteddfod field, Scene & Word chatted in her native Welsh with Beca about her work and what inspires her. Explaining what drew her to Jonah’s lettering and glass work, she said how much she loved his watercolour lettering in particular, how he could get so much character and craft into a simple thing like a letter, and how even as a child she’d always delighted in the vibrant colours of stained glass.
