‘A Resurrection’: the dramatic relocation of Jonah Jones’s largest mosaic

In July 2019 the process of transferring Jonah Jones’s large mosaic of Christ the Holy Redeemer from its original site in a church in Morfa Nefyn to its new home, Christ the Word Catholic School in Rhyl, was completed.

Michael Rieveley, company director of Rieveley Ceramics who carried out the whole project for the Catholic Diocese of Wrexham, said: “I consulted colleagues and did extensive research, but I couldn’t find any record of anyone getting anything like this done before.”

The story of how the scheme came about, and Rieveley Ceramics’ success in completing it, is particularly interesting. It is also a valuable example of the extremely complex process involved in restoring and relocating mid-20th century public artwork, half a century later.
