Books and publications from The Cidron Press and Adastra Publishing
Our imprint The Cidron Press publishes books by Jonah Jones or concerning the artist. We also distribute a range of titles donated to Scene & Word by Oriel Plas Glyn-y-Weddw and two of Jonah’s former publishers, Seren Books and Y Lolfa.
The list covers many aspects of Jonah Jones’s extraordinary life as one of Wales’s leading postwar artists, including several examples of his output as a published author.
Designed by Gwasg Gregynog, our flagship title, The Gregynog Journals, is drawn from Jonah’s handwritten and copiously illustrated daily journal, which he started during his year as artist in residence at the University of Wales’s Gregynog Hall in Powys and kept up for the rest of his life. Jonah believed that every artist should keep a daily notebook recording, in words and sketches, what they had seen and thought. His journals were a deep dive into what it was to be an artist, fascinating, vivid, lyrical and idiosyncratic, often funny and passionate.
From Seren Books we bring three titles. Two of them were written by Jonah: The Gallipoli Diary, a collection of essays reflecting on his life and how it shaped the principles, sources and influences of his practice as an artist; and Dear Mona: Letters from a Conscientious Objector, an intimate selection of wartime letters from Jonah to his mentor and would-be partner Mona Lovell. The third, published in 2011, is Peter Jones’s finely written biography, Jonah Jones: An Artist’s Life.
Completing the Cidron Press list are Y Lolfa’s third edition of Jonah’s classic walker’s guide, The Lakes of North Wales, and Oriel Plas Glyn-y-Weddw’s beautifully designed and produced catalogue for the centennial exhibition held at the gallery in 2019.
The launch title of our new imprint, Adastra Publishing, which focuses on the work of living Welsh artists, is Terry w Scales’s fabulously illustrated biography Line Red to Space / The Magnitude is Green.
