After almost eight years working away from North Wales, during which he was able to make very little sculpture, Jonah Jones found it difficult to resume his old vocation when he resettled at home in 1982. His output at first was intermittent, and he still spent much of his time writing. Of the pieces he did produce during this decade, his approach was varied, including a return to figurative carving along with abstraction.
Jonah enjoyed a late flowering of powerful carved sculpture in 1987–89, leading to some of his finest works, bold, confident and strong in conception and execution. With their mix of styles and themes, this group seems to encapsulate much of the essence of his life as a sculptor. It was a fitting end to the career of Jonah as a sculptor in stone. From now on, arthritis would prevent him from doing any more creative work in his favourite medium.
