The combination of slate and marble is particularly successful in Corris Man. Jonah described the genesis of the piece, in a letter to a friend in 1990: “It is one of those that remind me of a moment in time, just a glimpse ên passant, of a shepherd near Corris while I was up there getting slate, bursting through one of those slate fences they have there, after some recalcitrant sheep, and l thought, what a moment, his impatience, their wiliness, and that magnificent fence with that break in it which allowed him to burst his way through and help the dog head them off, And yet it’s just sculpture and could be anything, and that I like.”
