This was the largest of a series of eight sculptures Jonah carved in 1989 for a lifetime retrospective at Oriel Mostyn, Llandudno. He wrote about it in his journal: “Am carving three stones, a pile, which should show striation… ‘And Jacob rose up early in the morning, and took the stone that he had put for his pillows, and set it up for a pillar, and poured oil upon the top of it. And he called the name of that place Bethel.’ Genesis Chapter 35” (quoting from Jonah’s rather approximate memory).
