Glass: St Patrick’s, Newport

Oriel Jonah Jones logo

Jonah Jones’s commission at St Patrick’s in Newport, Gwent, came about as a direct result of his work at Ratcliffe College, both establishments being run by the Rosminian order. At the south end of the church he installed a large dalle de verre window with the saint in purple archbishop’s vestments. Much of the background is plain, but the borders contain green tendrils and St Patrick is flanked by curved red forms or mandorle. The window is relatively simple in design but has a sturdy power. The rebuilt church was opened in 1963.

The window was part of an impressive suite of work by Jonah at St Patrick’s, including a full wall mosaic and baldacchino, and a fine dedication plaque.
