Glass: Ampleforth College

Oriel Jonah Jones logo

In 1962–63 Jonah Jones carried out a substantial set of commissions for the crypt and end chapels at Ampleforth College in North Yorkshire. This included a number of stained-glass and dalle de verre windows. These are all on a relatively small scale, but exhibit a beautiful use of colour and line.

Jonah enjoyed his time working at Ampleforth, despite getting trapped there for a time in the harsh winter of that year. He became great friends with the Benedictine monks, especially the headmaster, Father Basil Hume, who would go on to become archbishop of Westminster.

He also made a large Madonna and Child and slate Stations of the Cross for Ampleforth.
