Meic Watts

Meic Watts graduated from Norwich School of Art and then began an apprenticeship in letter cutting and stone carving in Jonah Jones’s workshop near Penrhyndeudraeth. In 1989, with Jonah and the sculptor Howard Bowcott, he formed the Moelwyn Group to exhibit at the second Cricieth Festival. He took over the workshop after Jonah moved to South Wales in 1991.

His many public commissions include carvings celebrating Welsh dramatists at the open-air theatre at Parc Glynllifon, Tidemark at Cardiff Bay, the Slate Rope Bench in Hull, a carved slate Madonna at All Hallows Church, Llantrisant, the John Evans Memorial at Waunfawr, and St Ffraid’s Cross at Trearddur Bay. “My work has diversified over the years and I have used glass, metal and other materials with stone. The inspiration has always been the stone itself and working with nature.”
