Probably the most prominent of Jonah’s inscribed images are the series of Stations of the Cross which he made for a number of Catholic churches around Wales and England. During the late 1960s, he began to incorporate inscribed forms into his three-dimensional sculptures. He also carved bas-relief portraits and coats of arms. His favourite Welsh blue slate was a perfect material for this type of work, showing a sharp light cut in the dark surface.
