Description

Jonah Jones – watercolour and pencil, 2001

The lakes of Gwynedd were a profound source of material for Jonah Jones’s work and wellbeing, for he walked the hills with his whippet until old age. He found none more rewarding than the two lakes depicted in Llyn Caseg Fraith and Tryfan / Llyn Cau and Cader Idris. He painted both lakes many times and sometimes combined them, as he did here. Llyn Caseg Fraith is a pool on the plateau between Glyder Fach and Foel Goch, with the summit of Tryfan rearing up spectacularly behind it. In painting Llyn Cau and Cader Idris in 2001, Jonah was joining in distinguished company: Richard Wilson famously painted the same view, and J.M.W. Turner did a view just below the corrie. The text in Jonah’s work is from his book The Lakes of North Wales.
